Sykes hoping Brown turns down Evesham

STRIKER Carl Brown's run of red-hot form for Bishop's Cleeve has attracted interest from Southern League rivals Evesham United.

The former Cirencester Town forward bagged his fifth goal in three games as the Villagers held high-flying Poole Town to a 1-1 draw at Kayte Lane on Wednesday night.

That form has attracted interest from Evesham boss Paul West, who has lodged a seven-day approach for the speedy front runner.

Brown will be free to speak to West early next week, but Cleeve boss Alex Sykes is hoping that West will be on the receiving end of bad news, as he hopes Brown spurns the move.

"Evesham have come in for Carl and he's free to speak to them early next week," Sykes said.

"He's good friends with a couple of lads at Evesham and at the end of the day, what will be will be.

"I have a really good working relationship with Carl and I would like to think that he will consider staying.

"At the end of the day we won't be able to match Evesham in terms of money.

"But I would like to think that we can offer him more than money, with what we can offer him in terms of his development as a player.

"I wouldn't stand in a player's way if he wanted to go to a better level.

"But as it stands, they are at the same level, but I would like to think that we could compete with them on every level – apart from what money we can throw at players."

Brown's latest goal earned Cleeve a deserved share of the spoils against another of the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West's big spenders on Wednesday.

Poole Town arrived at Kayte Lane with a coaching and committee staff as big as their 18 man squad, highlighting their financial power.

But Sykes was more than happy with the way his side performed in earning a point that capped a solid recent run.

Abingdon United travel to Kayte Lane tomorrow (3pm) with Sykes hoping to go one better.

"If you had offered me a point against Poole, especially with their rumoured budget, then I would have taken it," Sykes said. "But at the same time we should be looking for all three against Abingdon.

"We've had a good run with points against Clevedon and Poole and the win at Cirencester, another win would cap that run off nicely."

Sykes welcomes back midfielder and assistant manager Matt Rose to the squad after work commitments, while Gloucester City loan pair Sam Rawlings and Matt Liddiard are available after missing the Poole game due being on FA Cup duty with the Tigers on Wednesday.
