Talks call before road trials
REMODELLING a notorious bottle-neck roundabout near Cheltenham without proper consultation would be madness, say community leaders.
The Highways Agency tabled proposals for a no right-hand turn at the Air Balloon roundabout for vehicles travelling down the hill from Cirencester. Those going to Cheltenham would have to go down the hill and join the A46 at Shurdington.
Cotswold District Council cabinet discussing the issue yesterday said implications needed to be explored. They recommended a motion calling on the Highways Agency to engage in a proper consultation before any trial.

“There was another accident tonight on the Shurdington Road - a VW Golf and a Toyota Starlet (or similar) crashed at one of the turn offs for Bentham. There were 3 emergency vehicles in attendance, hope no-one was seriously hurt in the crash. Queues back to the garden centre.
This road is already overcrowded with commuters, no need for hundreds more per hour along the road!”

“Build more tarmac...it's a simple solution that most users want and agree with! Stop *****-footing around!”

“Well done the cabinet of Cotswold DC. They can see it's a mad idea, like the rest of us.
But, will the Highways Agency listen, and "engage in a proper consultation", or is this a done deal, at least in terms of setting up a trial period?
Talking of the HA and local road projects, are we any further forwards with the final scheme for the bridge works at J10 on the M5? IIRC, the last suggestion was that the knackered bridge could be repaired (using "innovative techniques", whatever that means) rather than replaced, but with no particular indication as to whether anything further would be done to J10. Anybody know any more than this, or are we still awaiting a further update from the HA?”

“I can only think that the people coming up with this ludicrous suggestion have never driven along the A46 in rush hour. The traffic is already backed on to the Brockworth bypass waiting to get on to the A46, and then they crawl for many miles through Shurdington to get to Cheltenham. There are many cyclist also using this route at this busy time, and one was killed this week in Shurdington. The road is barely wide enough for bikes and cars, so a road improvement plan would need to be considered. Please don't underestimate the impact this extra volume of traffic would have on the drivers that use this route and the people who live along it.Stopping the traffic from using the Leckhampton hill route in to Cheltenham only transfers the chaos somewhere else... so think again, the A46 is already full to capacity.”
