A TATTOO parlour could be coming to Nailsworth if planners allow it to start up in an empty shop.

The venture's backer says the town is the right kind of place to open up – but not everyone is convinced.

"Nailsworth fits the image and is an up-and-coming area," said Graeme Miller, who has applied to Stroud District Council to change the use of part of the Old Crown in Market Street.

"What has been happening is that tattooing has now crossed all barriers. Where it used to be down a back street it isn't anymore."

So far, two letters of objection and one of support have been filed with the council.

In support, Nailsworth resident Bruce Burn wrote: "At last a new business that isn't a gift shop.

"Nailsworth needs new businesses and variety is the spice of life."

Two traders raised objections, including Fiona Hodges, of Number One ladies' clothes and accessories in Market Street.

She wrote: "As Nailsworth is such a historical mill town, full of beautiful shops and restaurants, I feel a tattoo shop is not in keeping with its cultural characteristics."

Mr Miller, of Miserden, has applied for permission to change the use of the former Venus Boutique. The plans can be seen at www. stroud.gov.uk/docs/planning/pla nning_application_detail.asp?App Ref =S.10/0139/COU.

“sounds great, nailsworth only seems to have food stores, cafes and tat shops!”
