Team to wait before making call on Bolster
A DECISION will be made tomorrow about whether David Bridgwater's stable star The Giant Bolster faces Long Run on Saturday.
The Giant Bolster and last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup winner are among the potential runners in a high-quality field for the Betfair Denman Chase at Newbury.
While freezing temperatures have put the star-studded card in doubt, racecourse chiefs are optimistic that racing will go ahead.
Owner Simon Hunt said The Giant Bolster was in "great order" following the biggest win of his career so far on Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham a fortnight ago.
Before Bridgwater declares the seven-year-old a definite runner on Saturday, the Stow-on-the-Wold trainer will consider a number of factors, including his well-being, the ground at Newbury and whether other races would suit him better.
Hunt said: "Basically we're just looking at a number of options for him.
"How he gets on in his next race will tell us where we're going for the Festival.
"But the Festival is not the be-all and end-all and we'll look after him.
"He's already gone up the handicap to 160 but he'll be a better horse when he's eight."
Other possible runners in the Denman Chase include Little Josh from Nigel Twiston-Davies' stable in Guiting Power and Halley from Tom George's yard in Slad.
Another pre-Festival option for The Giant Bolster is the Betfair Ascot Chase at Ascot on Saturday week, in which he could face Jonjo O'Neill's three-time Festival winner Albertas Run.
Alternatively, Bridgwater could wait for the high-profile Racing Plus Chase at Kempton on February 25.
The Giant Bolster has so far been given entries in two races at the Festival – the Gold Cup and the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.
