Scene of the crime
The 19-year-old victim was at the bus stop in Cheltenham Road at around 1.45am on Tuesday when the pair appeared from the direction of Estcourt Road, grabbed her and dragged her to alongside the main entrance to the university.
They then made off along Oxstalls Lane.
John O'Leary, 77, who lives in Oxstalls Lane, said he was sickened by the news.
"It is shocking when something like this happened so close to your home," he said.
"I heard some shouting and screams around midnight but thought it was students messing around, I don't know if it was related to the incident."
Thelma Griffin has lived in the area for 34 years. She said: "I am just so shocked. To have something as serious as this happen in Longlevens is worrying for families and parents."
Meanwhile, Detective Chief Inspector Alastair Stenner said: "There aren't any words to describe the ordeal the victim has been through.
"We're giving her as much support as we can and doing everything to secure as much evidence as possible.
"What I need is for everyone to think back to the early hours of Tuesday and call us if you were in the area and think you saw these men or anything unusual or suspicious."
Stewart Dove, director of student support at the University of Gloucestershire, said: "We have been informed the victim is not a student at the university, however, will continue to support the police with their inquires."
Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident 298 of January 30.
