A 19-YEAR-OLD Gloucestershire man suffered a heart attack and almost died after reportedly taking a cocktail of alcohol and the drug ecstasy.

Police were called to a flat in Bourton-on-the-Water at the weekend to reports of a man acting in a violent an abusive manner.

Paramedics had attended the High Street flat at around 12.45am on Saturday when the incident happened.

Two men at the address, aged 18 and 19, are believed to have taken a cocktail of alcohol and class A drug MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) - known as ecstasy.

They were initially refusing to go in the ambulance to hospital but a local officer attended and was able to persuade them that for their own welfare they needed to be checked out at the hospital.

Due to the officer’s encouragement the men did go with paramedics as, whilst at hospital, the 19-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest.

PC Chris Skinner said: “This morning we received the news that if we had not intervened and persuaded this man to go with the ambulance he may no longer be with us.

“This was clearly a very shocking and distressing incident for the man and his family and we want to warn other people of the dangers of this and other illegal drugs.

“We also encourage anyone with any information about illegal drugs to contact us or Crimestoppers so that action can be taken to prevent these substances from getting onto the county’s streets and bring to offenders to justice.”

Anyone with any information about the use or supply of illegal drugs is encouraged to report it to Gloucestershire Police by calling the non-emergency number, 101.

You can also give information anonymously by contacting the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

    “RoadWombat
I'm just repeating what PC Skinner said.
Surely though, as there is 'evidence' not proof, that someone is drunk, and is charged, the same applies to drugs?..otherwise, why bother at all!”

“It should also be pointed out that people should also be aware of the dangers of consuming legal prescription drugs along with alcohol too. PC Skinner failed to mention it and the paper didn't include it.

Separately, Isn't it weird how alcohol is one of only a few legal drugs that doesn't have to be sold with a massive list of side effects (which you seem to get even with a bottle of cough syrup these days)? ...May cause: drowsiness, vomiting, impotence ,incontinence, liver failure, coma, and death. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery! Do not make life-altering decisions while under it's influence. Warning: People may appear sexier than they really are.”

“8 comments, and it's still left to me to be the grammar nazi?

If it's not in contention that the chap nearly died, the inverted commas are unnecessary. Ditto, if this is simply a case of a subeditor hedging his/her bets.”

“Meerkatmanor - what are you going to charge them with? There are no drugs to show to a court, are there, (because he's presumably taken them) so you cannot prove possession. Or are you going to invent some method whereby forcibly taking a blood sample at hospital and analysing it will somehow 'prove' your case? There is, I'm afraid, no power available in law to do that.”

“It's noticeable that when people die, or nearly die, after taking illegal drugs, they have commonly taken a cocktail of drugs or washed an illegal drug down with alcohol.

Meerkatmanor, I think that there would be no point in prosecution in this case, as they have already been punished far more than anything that the law could hand out to them. Let's hope that they have learnt their lesson.”

Does that mean that those involved in this story are to be charged?”

“Very lucky young man. Very stupid, too. I trust he will be thanking the local officer who persuaded him to go to hospital. May well not be here today if he'd stayed put.

BIG lesson learned, hopefully. For him, his equally stupid mate, and others who dabble with drugs & wash them down with copious amounts of alcohol.”

“Takes a long time for a chap to mature, don't you know. Some never do, of course, and live their lives as wasters, and others don't manage to live long enough for maturity to happen. Young ladies – choose carefully…What !”
