TENANTS of Cheltenham Borough Homes are saving £100 a year on their electricity bills, with a new scheme.

The renewable energy project has seen solar electrical systems installed in 50 homes.

The houses are taking part in the Brighter Future, Greener Homes programme.

Homes were assessed using criteria such as the size of their roof space.

Paul Stephenson, chief executive of the housing association said: "We know that rising energy costs are hitting our tenants hard so we have developed this pilot to see how we can help them.

"It's really exciting to see the first of the solar panels going up and we are confident that the project will prove to be successful and will offer our tenants significant savings on their energy bills."

Trials elsewhere have shown savings on electricity bills of up to 10 per cent.

The technology works by prioritising the solar electric panel supply but still having it linked to the existing supply if the use in the household is more than from the renewable source.

Cheltenham Borough Homes is monitoring the renewable energy scheme.

It said it may roll it out in other areas next year if it proves successful.

“Sounds like CBH is spending a few thousand of pounds of other people's money so that a few people can save a hundred pounds of their own money.”
