Tesco Express will not harm businesses say Southgate traders
PLANS for a new Tesco Express shop in Gloucester have gathered pace.
A planning application has been made to Gloucester City Council by Tesco to put signs up on the former JJB shop, in Southgate Street, and to install an ATM there.
Matt Hellard, deputy manager from nearby Patisserie Valerie, says anything that improves footfall in Southgate Street would be good for them. "There is a concern about too many supermarkets in this area but it won't affect us too much," he said.
"There are more positives than negatives. It has been tough since Christmas, so more people here would be good."

The Big Eat in Southgate Street is one independent trader to suffer from competition. It is due to close this week after four months, with the owners looking to open elsewhere in the city.
Paul James, leader of the city council, said: "I think it will be good to bring such a large empty unit back into use.
"With the Greyfriars development happening, there will be a lot more people living in that area too so they will need a convenience store.
"It is important that we beef up the fashion and independent offerings in the city centre too though so there is a varied retail experience."
The proposals will be heard by the council's planning committee next Tuesday.
In September, plans were approved for Sainsbury's to move onto the site of the former India House pub on the junction of Barton Street and India Road. The Co-op is also planning to open in the former Animal shop in King's Walk.

“Forgot London Road 0.5 miles
Bus Station 0.5 miles
Has anyone spoken to the owners of Southgate News?
I also hope they will have a condition in their licence not to sell alcohol to the street drinkers!”
