Tesco and Co-op one step closer for Gloucester city centre opening
TWO new city centre supermarkets are a step closer to opening.
Tesco Express is opening at the former JJB store in Southgate Street.
The Co-operative is opening in the former Animal clothing store in Eastgate Street.
Both national supermarket chains were granted permission for their external signs by Gloucester City Council's planning committee on Tuesday night.

Tesco will adopt grey hoarding, while the Co-op will have a white frontage with green hanging signs.
Councillor Jeremy Hilton, leader of the city's Liberal Democrat group, welcomed both the stores.
He said: "We are now going to have four well known names in the city centre and it just gives people more reason to come back into the centre to do their food shopping rather than going out of town.
"This is a positive move for the regeneration of the city centre."
Work is under way on both stores.

“Rob remember that supermarkets are not a cheep option, the "express" type stores are more expensive than the normal supermarket. The "extra" jobs will be at the expense of other local businesses run by local people keeping more of the money local, this will take money and jobs out of our local economy.

“I feel that although any shop is better than an empty shop these stores are not really what the Gate Streets need.
The stuff they're selling is available many times over anywhere outside the City Centre.
Overkill comes to my mind rather than the regeneration that Jeremy Hilton sees and I feel that Gloucester needs more niche market enterprises. The smaller the better. Singular businesses that folk are wanting to visit because they are unique.”

Nice idea but these shops aren't large enough for people to do a proper food shop and nobody will venture into the centre of Gloucester and pay to park to buy food.
Why they've allowed both Tesco and Co-Op to open virtually identical stores so close to each other I don't know. There's already a Sainsburys.
Is the vision to have a supermarket in every gate street?”
