After the developments in North Bishops Cleeve have been given planning permission, Tewkesbury Borough Council are under fire after spending thousands of pounds of taxpayers money on these develpments from being built.

The majority of local residents in Bishops Cleeve actualy wanted the developments to be given the go ahead, but Tewkesbury Borough council was always trying to get them stopped as they knew that they woud have to spend more on Bishops Cleeve for local facilities. The local police station was earlier closed and reacommidated in Tewkesbury, but with an ever growing village why was it sacrificed just to save money in a village that is growing so fast it is as big as Tewkesbury itself. And with the population increase this obviously means more crime. At the moment, many people are anoid of the lack of facilities in Bishops Cleeve as they serve the whole of the South of the borough district. Neighbouring villages such as Woodmancote, Southam and Gotherington have demanded for better facilities from the borough council but there voices are not being heard. As Bishops Cleeve and its neighbouring villages have a approximate population of 20,000 (according to wikipedian census), they shoud surely be given at least a few facilities to enjoy.

But with the plans of a new swimming pool or leisure sport activities in the area, will Tewkesbury Borough Council finally give the people of Bishops Cleeve what they deserve?

    “julianw,

I am a proud resident of Bishops Cleeve and i realized that we were never in the news, so i have started writing important local articles. My position in all of this is a person from Bishops Cleeve spreading news, and if i get it in the echo then ill be very proud. But at the moment I have not contacted the reporter i am hoping he will email me.

But another important reason why i am doing this is because for example if a member of Tewkesbury borough council reads this specific article and notices that they are neglecting Cleeve then hopefully they will do something about it.

I know this sounds a bit odd but the only way to grab attention of the council is just get it in the news.

    Thanks for the question.”

    “@BishopsCleeve / James Lovering
Hi - sorry to go off topic
I'm just read this article and also the other one you did about the station - well done for highlighting local issues.
I thought you were an Echo writer but then I noticed a journo from the Echo asking you to contact him. What is your position - are you the official Bishops Cleeve contributor to the Echo?
No sinister reason for asking, just curious :-)”

    “Love it PengiPete.

You do make a good point Andy, but I would imagine the Tewkesbury Car parks will more than make up for the shortfall in council tax (don't quote me on that but it feels like it as they seem to love taking my pound coins!!).

That said, I do agree that a village the size of Bishops Cleeve should really have better facilities.

And as for the VIllage/Town debate, I have always thought that a population of about 5000 is a suitable threshold for a Town, but looking at it another way I thought this was a fairly good description that I found on Yahoo Answers:

"A village depends on a town for certain services eg schools, doctors, shops etc. To become a town, the village must supply these services."

I was also amazed at how many people on my search erroneously insist that in order to attain City status you must have a Cathedral.”

“According to some of the more recent census of Tewkesbury (incl Ashchurch, Northway and Walton Cardiff) and Bishops Cleeve the two areas are on a par with each other with regards to size, with both around the 17,000 mark. (As Matt1006 has stated Tewkesbury is actually a lot smaller than BC).

However, if you then take into account the average selling price of a property in Oct 2012 for Tewkesbury was £177,000 and Bishops Cleeve was £253,000 (according to home.co.uk) the disparity is even more stark. Bishops Cleeve will be contributing a lot more to the Tewkesbury Council Tax revenues, with a lot less services provided locally.”

“A well written piece. Just a couple of spelling mistakes but not bad. Wikipedia is also a very reliable source of evidence.”

“BC is still formally a village, but in reality it's a town with very inadequate facilities. The current population (16,500) is already much larger than local towns such as Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn. And if you discount Walton Cardiff, Northway & Ashchurch, Tewkesbury's population is only around two thirds of what BC's is now.

And with 1,000 new homes now approved, the population of BC could well increase by perhaps another 3,000 within the next couple of years once all are built & occupied, which then puts it not far behind Evesham (22,300) in terms of population.

1,000 extra properties will generate possibly an extra £1m in Council Tax for TBC. They need to dig deep now and improve the facilities within the village (town?), and then use the extra CT from the 1,000 new homes to replenish the pot.”
