Tewkesbury trader stunned at huge parking rate rise
SHOPKEEPER Nickie Philipson- Stow is fuming at a 33 per cent hike in parking permit prices in Tewkesbury.
The owner of The Orange Pig children's clothes shop in High Street is stunned at the amount she will have to pay to continue parking in Spring Gardens car park.

ANGRY: Nickie Philipson-Stow in Tewkesbury's Spring Gardens car park, for which her annual permit will cost £507
From April, the annual permit will cost her £507 – up £127 on this year's £380 – and she said: "I think it's too much, particularly when we're in a recession.
"I said so when they decided this would be the case a year ago and I feel the same way now."
Nickie said the demands of her business meant she had no choice but to pay the extra charge.
Tewkesbury Borough Council said the increase would only affect its short-stay car parks.
The council's lead member for economic development and promotion, Councillor Phil Taylor, said: "Our parking permits are extremely competitive. Despite the increase, they are some of the cheapest in the county.
"Permit charges were increased in 2005 and have remained constant until last year."

“How can the council justify this increase, I know they have held the price down for a while for permit holders but come the winter they never clear the car parks of snow or Ice, last winter the market traders had to clear it so they could open their stalls, what exactly are we paying for????”

“I refer to mrbuysenshouse, uk comments on this forum. When we bought our house in the town centre one of the considerations was parking as both my husband and I have cars - parking was FREE back then and the particular land on which the carpark was built had been donated to the people of Tewkesbury for use of. So please don't stand there on you high and mighty soapbox and make supercilious comments. Many of the old folk in the town have lived in these houses for a long long time and sheltered accommodation is not a choice they either want or need. At leat I know that the 300 year old house that I currently live in will still be here in another 300 years - will your boring box on an estate be?”
