Thousands of drivers have been stung by a new CCTV camera in Gloucester
ALMOST 6,000 drivers have been caught out by a CCTV camera placed above Llanthony Bridge in just one month.
The camera, which was only put up in July, has already generated a six-figure sum in fines.

Sting: The new CCTV camera on Lalnthony Bridge
Between July 19 and August 24, 5,767 motorists have been caught crossing it – a rate of around 155 a day.
Only buses, taxis, emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians are allowed over the bridge. Each driver was dealt a £60 fine, although this is reduced to £30 if paid within a fortnight.
Once all fines have been paid, the camera would have so far earned between £173,010 and £346,020 for Gloucestershire County Council.
One angry driver, who did not want to be named, said: "I was completely unaware cars were not allowed across the road. I went back and had a look and there's no notification that it is a bus lane until you're almost upon it.
"There should be signs at the Spa Road lights junction, so people sat in traffic have a chance to see it.
"This just seems like a cash cow for the council."
Of the fines issued 64 per cent have already been paid, one per cent have been appealed against, and the remainder are outstanding.
Barry Leach, chairman of Gloucester City Centre Community Partnership, agreed the signs leading up to the bridge were not clear.
He said: "They feel the signs should be much earlier to stop drivers going on to Llantony Road.
"A lot of people are looking for parking, and once they are down that road, watching for pedestrians crossing from the quays to the Docks, their attention is drawn away from the signs."
The county council, which keeps all the cash generated from the camera, said since the CCTV was put up bridge crossings from cars had fallen from 2,000 to 170 a day.
Philip Williams, parking and transport manager, said: "This is not about making money for the council, it's about ensuring pedestrians have safe passage around the docks and helping buses stick to their timetables and people need to realise they cannot keep making excuses for doing this."
In a statement to The Citizen, the council said it would not accept any excuses about sat nav systems, and "drivers must acknowledge the signs and lines on the road ahead of them".

“I have been a driving instructor, advanced driving instructor, hgv instructor, psv instructor for 10 years, also a hgv driver, psv driver for 30 years, I went over the bridge and although I am by no means a perfect driver I was surprised to recieve a £60 fine today, Maybe I just didn;t see the signage but judging by the comments on here there is certainly something wrong here. I am not in a position to return to Gloucester to check for myself the signs and road markings to check if they are legal. I spent many happy times in Gloucester when I used to park my truck overnight at the cattle market. I dont think I will be returning again now.”

“On 3rd August I went to Gloucester for an appointment. I am disabled and was feeling totally unwell that day. I was using my sat nav system and also watching the road and the heavy traffic using the road.
I became completely lost & the way my sat nav took me was over the bridge. I must have driven round and round Gloucester about 50 times by this time because of the road works.
I honestly did not see the signs until I was actually ON the bridge & what was I supposed to do then?
Never been to Gloucester before in my life, feeling quite poorly and totally lost PLUS running late for my appointment.
I eventually found a car park near to where I was going. Parked my car and correctly displayed my blue badge - I remember checking about five times that it was correct as I was feeling so ill & worried I would miss my appointment too.
After parking my car I checked with the attendant whether I had to pay to park or whether I got the 3 hours that most places allow you with a blue badge - he assured me that I had 3 hours and didn't need to pay where I was parked.
I eventually made my appointment 40 minutes late and when I returned to my car after about 80 minutes I found a penalty charge notice on the windscreen apparently I had parked with my badge incorrectly displayed - strangely enough it was displayed in the manner that the blue badge handbook instructs and also the way that my local traffic wardens have told me to display it.
I contested this and did manage to get it cancelled. Two days later, I receive another notice through the post for going over the Bridge. I immediately called the council and the lady on the other end of the phone asked me to contest by email, explaining all circumstances and that she was sure it would be cancelled.
I have just received an extremely rude letter from the council rejecting my request.
I will pay the fine but ensure that they know it is under duress.
This was the first time that I have ever been to Gloucester and I can assure you that I will never return. I am also going to tell everyone I know about this and see how many people go elsewhere to do their Christmas shopping etc.
Is it any wonder that so many people shop online these days when they are ripped off like this? I hadn't even gone to Gloucester for 'pleasure, entertainment or shopping'.
I agree with some of the other posters here, maybe a warning for first time offenders and then a fine. Having a fine is one thing but to receive such a rude rejection letter is also another.”

“On Sunday afternoon we decided to visit the Waterways Museum in Gloucester Docks, and looking at a map I saw that the easiest way in was over the Lock Bridge, along Severn Rd, then left into Llantony Rd (names found subsequently on Google). I did not see any signs at the bridge as I was concentrating on the pedestrians on the bridge and only realised I had made a mistake on seeing the big yellow £60 signs when in the Museum car park. There are certainly NO signs warning of this restriction at the junction of Severn Rd/Llantony Rd, which surely is an obvious place to put them.
I admit that I have done wrong but do feel that the signage is very inadequate, and although I will pay the "fine" I will be checking on the full legality of them as well.
It has certainly put me off bothering to go back to the Museum and Gloucester in the near future.”

“I always like to make the most out of a situation, so whenever I cross the bridge I wave at the camera with a huge smile on my face. It's really nice to have a top quality photo of your car delivered to your abode. In fact, I have one framed above my fireplace, and whenever I feel down, I look at it and remind myself just how lucky I am - I'm a motorist who has a brilliant short cut to get to my favourite shop, Sainsburys!
To keep things original, I think I might start wearing different hats. You know? Cowboy hats, sombreos etc and build a collection.
Thanks for cheering me up GCC!”

“So the Council say its not about the money, so why don't they send a warning to offending motorists and fine them for the second and subsequent offences until the public have got used to the new regime. Everybody makes mistakes and in panic probably proceed forward rather than try to turn around in a busy area.”

“'Joe K, I'm afraid that you are wrong about the turning from Parliament Street onto Brunswick Road. Drivers ignore the "no right turn" signs all the time at that junction. The prohibition is never enforced. I should think that hundreds of drivers every day break the law at that junction' - Kay Powell, Robinswood
Do you mean I'm wrong about a 'U' turn being legal, Kay, or do drivers actually manage to turn right. The only way I see that they could do that is by driving (the wrong way) onto the red painted buses & taxis area, but then they would have no idea if the traffics lights were against them or not.
The junction does not so much say 'no right turn' as tell you to 'TURN LEFT' in large painted words. It's really not so much a left turn as a filter lane onto the 'Bootsbound' lane of Brunswick Road. You might think I'm just being a cleverdick with my 'U' turn theory, but you also know that we the public take what the council tell us at face value too much these days. Are we now supposed to even accept what is only implied?”

“That'll be almost 6000 drivers who will not be attracted to that area of Gloucester. I wonder how many visitors to the area that included ? It's a sure bet none of them will return !”

“Avoid disappointment next time you are out and about. Visit Cribbs Causeway. What sheer joy of shopping at the Mall Cribbs Causeway with free parking too. A lot more invigorating for the soul than seeing a Gloucester traffic warden playing his ping pong balls along Llantony Road.”

“given the number of people who ignore the no entry signs on Brunswick Road by Boots, the County Council also ought to put a camera there too”
