TiG Gloucestershire cycling survey - how safe do you feel on the roads?
Few subjects can divide opinion as much as cycling does.
On the one hand some cycling advocates believe they are persecuted by motorists while drivers often feel frustrated by cyclists' activities on the road.

“I drive cars, vans, lorries, tractors all the time and ride motorbikes and push bikes every day; so I know the frustrations of both sides.
However, I have recently come back from Brugges and was staggered that bikes have right of way everywhere, and I understand if a car hits a bike or vice versa the initial blame falls with the car. A little extreme and probably not suited to Chelt or Glos, but the point is everyone there rides a bike all the time, and the city is better for it, with much less congestion and pollution.
Sadly there is allot of agro on our roads, personally I don't get drawn into it as I have more important things in my life to worry about, so long we all remain safe. As an observation though, it is usually older gentlemen who get agro with me on my bike, most frequently in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday morning; maybe they are in a rush to get to confession or the golf club?
A little more tolerance all round would be good, and we should all believe in Karma!”

“Just the sort of survey we would expect from TIG.”

“not the best set out survey. Where's the option for 'I've been told by car drivers that I shouldn't be on the road and should cycle on the pavement'
The most common problem I have is poorly maintained road surfaces - especially near the kerb - and car drivers passing too close when they overtake.
Oh and were's the questions for car drivers that ask if they've broken the speedlimit, parked on double yellow lines, hogged the middle lane on the motorway?”

“Can the TiG be good enough to confirm that this survey is of professional quality? If there is no feedback to the good people of Gloucestershire, we can make our own assumptions that the quality of reporting they put on their pages is substandard?”

“I wonder what would happen if all us car drivers answered the questions thus:-
1 - 1
2 - 1
3 - 5
4 - 4
5 - 1
6 - 1
7 - 1
8 - 1
9 - Other "Too many bicycles"
10- Other "None of these"
11 - 2
As for the postcode, what IS it for Cloud Cuckoo Land?”

“Furthermore if you've answered question 1 as "I don't drive a car or ride a bicycle" and question 2 as "I never ride a bicycle" how on earth are you supposed to answer questions 3, 4, 5, and 6 - which are obligatory but relate to ones cycling experience?
Can I suggest that TiG takes this survey down immediately and leaves it down until its basic errors of construction have been tackled?”

“Very biased questions. Now when are we going to have one that asks drivers about cyclists? I totally agree with gloslad and have seen all of the things he talks about and more. pete-uk asks for a a box marked None of the above, my suggestion is that there should be one marked "All of the above and more".”

“Well I'll have to repeat them then!
Firstly:
The survey is defective since I needed to answer this question with two responses and it refused to allow me to:
Have you ever been abused or insulted by a motorist or pedestrian while cycling? *
I have been verbally abused
I am a motorist and I have been physically assaulted or verbally abused by a cyclist
... and I agree with "Pete_UK" about having to select "other" and put "none of the above"
Secondly:
Cyclists are MUCH more likely to break road rules than motorists.”
