The two clubs first met in the final of the 1989/90 County Cup, which Cheltenham won 2-0 courtesy of a Mark Boyland and Mark Buckland strikes.

The Robins first visited Lodge Road for a competitive fixture in November 1991, this time in the semi-final of the County Cup.

Kim Casey's goal took Cheltenham through to the final.

Cheltenham won a two-legged Dr Marten's Cup tie in October 1994 and also beat Yate on penalties in the County Cup final later that season.

After knocking Yate out of the 1995/96 FA Cup, Cheltenham also ousted them out of the County Cup at the semi-final stage. Subsequent meetings in the County Cup have seen Cheltenham field a reserve team, with the most recent clash in 2011 when Yate won 3-2.
