GLOUCESTER City must not be too cocky in their first season in the Blue Square Conference North, says captain Neil Mustoe.

The Tuffley-based defender said he was pleased the core Tigers squad was sticking together and said confidence was the key to success.

"Last season we showed what we can achieve when we work together," he said. "And it is very important knowing we will be back together next season.

"The teams in Blue Square North don't know about us, but we are good enough to hold our own.

"It is all about confidence – we have the confidence at the moment but we need to make sure we are not cocky."

Mustoe said he could not imagine playing for any other side. He supported Gloucester City, plays and captains them and also managed them for a brief period in January 2006.

"I was always going to sign," he said. "I have been here five years and I wouldn't want to waste five years' hard work just to take money elsewhere.

"Obviously with my family and with work there were things to consider, but I didn't really want to go anywhere else. I am going to give it my best shot."

Mustoe said the extended journey times in the Blue Square North were something the team would just have to cope with.

"Travelling is part of football," he said. "Some of the lads listen to music, others play cards or read. Everyone deals with it differently and that's what we will continue to do.

"For me, it was always whether I could do it and fit in work and see my family. My wife doesn't want me to stop playing, she wants me to carry on.

"With work, pre-season and a baby on the way, it won't be so bad getting back in the early hours from trips to Blyth because I'll have the baby to see to."

Meanwhile, the final member of the promotion-winning squad has confirmed his place for next season.

Tigers boss Dave Mehew said he was delighted midfielder Marc Richards was staying with he club.

He said: "We were hoping to keep Rico. A lot of people were interested in him and it is good to tie him down.

"He is only 27, even though it seems like he has been around for a lot longer.

"He won't be playing for Hartpury this year, either, which will be better for his fitness. You can't play four games of football a week forever."
