TOADS are being saved from death thanks to a new fence installed next to a busy junction.

Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust helped residents at Pitchcombe, near Stroud to erect a fence to stop them crossing the junction of the A46 and the A4173.

It will be patrolled nightly by a team of trained Toad Patrollers who will carefully pick up the toads and carry them to the other side of the road.

When the ground temperature reaches 5C toads move en masse – usually within a week – to their breeding ponds. The migration period is usually in February, although it is weather dependent so can happen any time from now, until March.
