Sir Tom Jones rocks Gloucester at Kingsholm

IT'S not unusual to see knickers flying through the air at a Tom Jones concert, and Friday's sell-out bash at Kingsholm was no exception.

"The Voice" himself took to the stage at the home of the Cherry and Whites in front of a sell-out crowd of 12,000 avid fans.

The 72-year-old stormed through a hit-filled set including all the favourites such as Mama Told Me Not To Come, What's New Pussycat and It's Not Unusual.

As has become custom with a Sir Tom Jones concert, undergarments were thrown onto the stage throughout the performance by dozens of women, including Sarah Blake, from Westbury.

She said: "I threw mine, but I'm not sure if they made it to the stage or not!

"His performance was really good though, especially considering his age. He sounded like a recording, it was that good.

"I am a big fan of his older stuff, not so much his newer songs. I love You Can Leave Your Hat On but I was a bit disappointed he didn't play Sex Bomb.

"I thought Kingsholm worked really well as a music venue and they should have more concerts in there, it was excellent."

The rugby stadium was fully converted into a music arena with temporary flooring laid out on the pitch and the stage situated in front of The Shed, facing the main stand. Despite the music legend, who has recently appeared as a judge on TV's The Voice, being 10 minutes late on stage, the atmosphere was buoyant throughout.

After finishing his first song, Sir Tom Jones received rapturous applause after he said: "Is everybody feeling all right? Are we going to have a good time tonight in Gloucester? My grandfather came from Gloucester you know."

Katie Mooney, 32, from Stroud, said: "It was so good, I love Tom Jones. I was stood at the front with my mum and my auntie and we had a great time.

"The atmosphere in the stadium was amazing."

For Sarah Neill, from Gloucester, it was the third time she saw her musical idol in the flesh.

She said: "That was the best I've seen him perform, by far, he was brilliant.

"His concerts have so much energy. It is credit to the man who has been performing some of the songs for decades, week in, week out, yet he still delivers them all so well.

"All of his songs are great to sing and dance to, and I definitely danced the night away!

"Kingsholm is a fantastic music venue, I really hope they hold more events there."

Before the event The Citizen held a competition, won by Caroline Webb, to meet Sir Tom Jones. The Hucclecote resident took her sister, Lorraine Evans, along with her.

The music legend was supported by three piece band the Loveable Rogues, who rose to fame after reaching the final of Britain's Got Talent, and Mim Grey, an accomplished singer/songwriter who has performed with Paul McCartney and Dave Stewart.

This was the second big music event held at the rugby ground. In May last year, Gloucester's own Nathan Sykes and his band The Wanted performed.
