University of Gloucestershire All Golds 20

South Wales Scorpions 42

The University of Gloucestershire All Golds were given a sharp lesson in the realities of life in the professional ranks as they were brushed aside by a sharper, more accurate South Wales Scorpions team for whom both Dalton Grant and Rhodri Lloyd scored twice in a 42-20 win, writes Chris Wilson.

Coach Brad Hepi was disappointed with the performance after the positives shown in defeat against Hemel Stags last week.

"I was expecting a lot more from the boys this week", he said. "You've got to string together 80 minutes of concentration and effort at the moment we're playing probably 30 per cent of the game.

The Scorpions eased to a 22-0 lead after half an hour with Connor Farrer, Jack Pring, Grant and Alex Jones all crossing the whitewash, Ollie Olds adding three goals before Tim Bergin responded with a try following an all too rare All Golds raid in the Scorpions 20.

The Scorpions pace and speed of thought too often caught the home side out and Hepi conceded that his side were struggling to cope with the intensity of the game at this level.

"Its a learning curve for the guys. Some of them have played at Super League clubs at Under 18 or under 20 level and then the rest of the guys who are new to the game and have only played at student level. It's the jump in class and the jump in intensity and speed that they're struggling with at the moment".

In the second period, the Scorpions grabbed three more scores to take a 38-4 lead with Grant strolling over for his second try and Lloyd twice touching down Olds grubber kicks before they then went off the boil.

On the back of an avalanche of penalties, the All Golds ran in three tries in the final quarter through Mike Stewart, Sam Blaney and a score on the hooter from James Gahan just after Shae Lyon-Fraser had gone over for the visitors.

With the first away trip of the season to unbeaten London Skolars next week, Hepi noted ominously that: "The boys will be looking at their third successive defeat next week unless they turn their application around".
