REPAIRS to a sewer pipe in Cheltenham town centre, which have been causing disruption to traffic, are set to continue this weekend.

Severn Trent Water engineers have been trying to carry out the work, in Bath Street, since July 6.

It was meant to take three weeks, but work had to be suspended when diggers uncovered other utilities' pipes and electrical wiring.

Following a survey by a structural engineer, the firm was given the all clear to continue the repairs this weekend through manual digging.

“KAF1960 - agreed. I still contend that utility works are not checked and approved by a local Highways Inspector, therefore meaning that shoddy re-tarmacing of backfilled utility holes go unchecked, and result in potholes the following winter, or just road surfaces resembling corrugated sheeting (or perhaps that is intentional, to act as traffic calming). All after an open hole has been left untouched for months.

Severn Trent and their contractors have caused no end of problems around the county over the past few years, and made a right mess of many roads (causing extended periods of disruption in the process). Yes I know they have to do essential works / upgrades etc. on their infrastructure, but the repeated delays / errors / gross balls-ups seem to be never-ending, and frankly they don't seem to give a toss about the additional hassle they cause as a result.

Every couple of years we hear about new initiatives from highways authorities to get the utility companies to sort themselves out in terms of roadworks. And every time nothing changes. How about, just for a change, Gloucestershire Highways actually get their own act together, and start to hit Severn Trent and their seemingly hapless contractors with BIG fines - making sure that said fines are paid out of ST's profits, and not passed on to the long-suffering consumer.

In the meantime, I'll carry on counting the pigs flying past my window.”

“So, 3 weeks from 6th July is the 27th July or 5 weeks ago. One presumes that the other utilities pipes etc. were discovered early in the process. On that basis it took perhaps 6 weeks for some council jobsworth to turn up, look into the hole and decide that ST had to use shovels instead of diggers. What a complete farce. Why is it that any work done to roads or pavements seems to take an absolute age? How many times have we all passed holes in the road surrounded by barriers but witnessed nothing going on? The sooner all utilities are forced into doing any remedial work in conjunction with each other the better for all of us.”
