SAFTETY concerns will need to be addressed before rickshaws are seen on the streets of Cheltenham.

Councillors agreed to defer making a decision on introducing the innovative pedal-powered vehicles to the town on Tuesday night (September 25).

They say more work needs to be done detailing how safe the vehicles are and how they will be licensed and regulated.

The proposals were initially put forward to Cheltenham Borough Council in March of this year by Rickshaw Revolution, a Cheltenham-based company keen to provide the new service in the town.

“I have looked at the photos on their web site and it looks like the model of rickshaw they will be using is the Turkish made Speedy Cab. Speedy Cabs are cheaply made knockoffs of the ever popular Eco Taxis. I doubt they are insurable and if you look close you will note that there does not seem to be a front brake.”

“Rickshaws are a menace in London and there are plans to restrict or even ban them. Introducing them into a tiny space like Cheltenham will be a a retrograde step.”

“Whether or no thomas1996 be right in predicting empty rickshaws is no-one's concern but the owners'. In the meantime, the Council is standing in the way of an eco-friendly initiative which will contribute to Cheltenham's international brand and its popularity as a tourist destination, as well as providing a link between the town centre and its most interesting and neglected areas - Montpellier and Prestbury.

Many other towns have contrived to include rickshaws in their transport systems. Cheltenham has not bothered to consult with them, preferring to exercise obstructive power pending research which itshould have done months ago.”

“Having been standing in Oxford Street in London for a while on Saturday watching the numerous rickshaw drivers there negotiating the traffic and the pedestrians, I can only hope the standard of driving will be better if they even are allowed here.”

“Anyone with half a business brain would know that there would only be a few weeks a year when you could make any 'real' money with this. The weeks would be:

    1. Gold Cup week - definitely, especially if they go to the racecourse
    2. Literary festival - possibly, or only at the 2 weekends
    3. Height of the summer - When will that be in 2013? No-one knows which week will be hot!”

“I'm just hoping that my bus pass will cover a ride on these Rickshaws if the idea ever gets off the ground.”
