Traffic chaos has greeted motorists on the A40 near Longford this afternoon.

Massive tailbacks have been reported, with dozens of drivers taking to Twitter to warn others away from the area.

However, police said they were unaware of any incidents.

Great Western Ambulance crews were called to the area at 1.30pm after a car driven by a man in his 70s collided with a lorry but it is unclear if that is what's reponsible for the gridlock.

“There were two lorries rear-ended at null with traffic tailed back to the A417 Maisemore roundabout and beyond, with police directing traffic at the scene.

Four-wheeled traffic was certainly gridlocked. *:p”

“Problem wasn't Cheltenham Road, although roadworks there didn't help. Cheltenham Road, Estcourt Road & Tewkesbury Road were all affected, due to the A40 from Elmbridge roundabout to Longford roundabout being totally gridlocked. The accident/incident (I couldn't see cause, but there was a fire engine with blue lights flashing) was just beyond the Longford roundabout heading towards the Over Causeway roundabout. Problem then was all the roads that can be used to avoid this traffic problem see more use, blocking them too.
Was meant to be collecting wife from Gloucester Docks - she walked across town to opposite the Winfield & jumped in as I sat in traffic. Longford roundabout blocked with people trying to cross but having nowhere to go, this then blocked Tewkesbury Road, which then blocked Estcourt & St Oswalds Road, stretching through Cheltenham Road. I headed through Longlevens, Innsworth & Churchdown just to get home, taking 2 hours to do 15 miles.”

“The roadworks on Cheltenham road are a disgrace. Surely they should be made to do this work on such a busy road on off peak hours ? As they approach the roundabout it is getting more congested and potentially more dangerous.”

“Took 45 minutes to get from Elmbridge Court roundabout to Longford roundabout. This was from 4.20pm. Fire engine went past just as I got caught in traffic & blue lights just beyond Longford roundabout on the single carriageway section to Over roundabout when I finally got to roundabout. Still solid traffic along entire stretch at 5.30pm. If the police weren't aware, then where were they? All routes avoiding A40 gridlocked as a result.”

“Road works on Cheltenham road traffic backing up onto the A40 golden valley blocking the entire rounderbout!”
