FIXERS tackled repairs for free when Transition Stroud set up its stall at a coffee house in the town.

A broken toaster, a hammer without a shaft and a cycle light in need of soldering were all mended by volunteers during the special morning at the Black Book Cafe in Nelson Street.

Skilful mechanical and electrical engineers and a seamstress were among the helpers who made do and mended people's many broken items.

Erik Wilkinson, who is a member of Transition Stroud, said he spotted the Dutch repair cafe movement and decided to try the idea out in Stroud. He said: "We had 24 people who brought things in."
