The family of Mark Parker paid loving tribute to him at his funeral yesterday.

Family and friends joined vicar Roger Widdecombe to recall memories of the 27-year-old 'cheeky chap' from Cheltenham, who died on November 11.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Mark had embraced Christianity and Mr Widdecombe, from St Paul's Church, offered guidance and support.

To the words of Celine Dion's My Heart will Go On, Mark's coffin, adorned with bouquets, was taken into the church.

Cousin Shaun Parmar read a message to the congregation. The pair had been reunited following the death of Mark's mum, Heather, earlier this year.

"Mark had faced many challenges in his short life," he said. "A troubled upbringing, overcoming some tough situations that would burden any young man's soul. But Mark took most of it in his stride.

"He was a strong man with a good sense of humour. He cared for his mum and dad a lot and he never really spoke badly of anyone. In fact he remained quietly optimistic. He had a lovely smile and enjoyed making other people laugh.

"He was a gifted artist. He had loads of paintings and drawings. I love to think of him doing them as they were probably some of the most peaceful, content moments of his life.

"On Mark's birthday, we asked him what he would like. His reply was, 'I just want my mum back. That's all I want'. Mark's prayers were answered and, tragic though the circumstances of his death, we can find peace knowing that this sweet, caring, courageous young man is reunited with his mother."

Mark's body was found in a flat in Painswick Road, Cheltenham, last month. Police launched a murder inquiry and six people were later arrested. They remain on police bail, although a pathologist's report has now determined his death is 'unexplained'.
