Trust your Gloucestershire butcher

That's the message from Gloucestershire's butchers in the wake of the Tesco horse meat scandal.
The supermarket giant sold a beefburger containing 29 per cent horse meat, and they have since blamed their supplier.
The incident sent shockwaves through the country, raising question marks over other products.

Here in Gloucestershire, our butchers are championing their products amid the scandal.
Keith Richards, of Chris Duberley butchers, in Alvin Street, Gloucester, said: "We have had the odd person in talking about it.
"It is quite simple in my eyes. Any business that makes a claim on a packet that isn't true about the product, they are breaking the law.
"I am sure Tesco had no idea about it, and it will be interesting to see what follows when they work there way back down the production chain.
"There is a bit of meat called the 'trim' which is what is left over when cutting up a joint. It is this bit that is sent for mincing into burgers and sausages. It is impossible to tell, when they are all in a big bag together, what animal that comes from."
He added: "We always encourage people to buy their meat at their local butchers.
"We know where our meat comes from, and up against the finest ranges in supermarkets we are cheaper."
Peter Jefferies, of Peter Jefferies & Son butchers, in Cirencester Road, Cheltenham, said: "I wasn't surprised at all when I heard, it's a big joke isn't it.
"These supermarkets are getting away with so much. They advertise a pork loin for 'half price' for one week only, and that price is what we sell the same joint at for 52 weeks a year!
"People should buy their meat at their local butchers, once we get new customers, they stay with us."
Nick Brown, of Nick Brown Family Butchers, in Innsworth Lane, said: "It has been the talk of the place for the past week, we have had a lot of people asking about it.
"We get all our meat from Gloucestershire and Scotland, we know where it comes from. Trust your local butcher."
Of the 27 burgers analysed, a third were contaminated with horse meat and eight in 10 contained traces of pork. One Tesco Everyday Value beefburger contained 29 per cent horse meat.
Tesco, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl, have pulled millions of burgers from their shelves.

“InspectorGade - I don't know any self respecting Butcher that buys in ready made Burgers (i'm talking independents here and not supermarkets). They start with the Carcass of a cow and go from there. They know exactly where that cow came from and probably its diet and they know exactly what goes into every burger because they put it in.
Besides, 30% meat in Tesco Value burgers must be a lot more than you usually get, even if it is horse. Who actually buys them anyway, they are horrid and shrivel up to nothing when you cook them.”

“Since no comment has been made on how horse entered the chain, it's impossible for butchers to claim that they cannot be affected. Unless the butcher watches every cow get slaughtered and doesn't let it leave his sight until the burger is in his possession, of course.”
