Funding for the University of Gloucestershire has been cut by the Government.

The university’s allowance for 2010/11 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is £30,000 less than the year before, at £24,547,350.

The university, which has campuses in Cheltenham and Gloucester, is already facing financial woe in part due to the cap on student numbers, down 100 to 2,300 places for September.

University bosses are seeking to save £3 million by the summer and have already put the London campus up for sale, with plans for Pittville to follow suit.

Jobs have gone through voluntary redundancy and more are imminent, despite union opposition to save them.

The allocation is provisional until July 2010. Capital funding allocations will be announced separately by June 2010.

Director of communications, Paul Drake, said: “This funding settlement is challenging as it makes no provision for any national pay agreement or inflation. The university has been anticipating the need to reduce costs through its business change programme announced last year and the development of new income streams.

“Following the successful QAA Institutional Audit and with plans for a new three-faculty structure, we are confident that the university is positioning itself for a strong and vibrant future.

“The university is well-prepared for the more explicit higher education market that is unfolding.

“Applications to study are up again and the university anticipates being full well before the summer clearing period.”

The total grant for the University of Gloucestershire includes monies for teaching, research and from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF).

Prior to the Government cap, university bosses announced ambitious plans to double its intake from 9,500 students to 15,000 by 2012 and create a new campus in Black Friars, Gloucester but these were abandoned following the Government’s decision.

“There appears to be some confusion over the true history of the University. Wikipedia gives various detail but those interested will find certain key information on the University web site.

“Well, it's intersting how the uni want to save millions! Yet there budget cut is a mere £30k! I wouldn't say I'm a mathematician, but something isn't right!

Oh and did you know that Worcester actually had its funding increased!”

“Oh how it shows how slow the students, of this university must be, or at least the last commenter. Its not just the ¿biscuit¿ budget that¿s been cut. The settlement this year, has implications on every year that follows it, however the biggest cut is in the fact that Gloucestershire has had its students numbers capped! So it cant afford do expand ect or in fact even run the courses it currently has. Hence the reason for the selling off of campuses etc. So yes the settlement is 0.1% lower but in real terms due to the cut in funding the universities loss in come runs into hundreds of thousands, now that is a serious cut in the ¿biscuit¿ budget.”

    “Angus, Tetbury
You're a Troll, stop it and grow up, it's not big.......
What all of you forget is that Glos Uni grew out of ordinary colleges, in fact VERY ordinary colleges.
To say it should be in Cheltenham is fine, as long as the same facilities are offered to Gloucester and southern parts of the county. So we could also have Gloucester Uni, with all the duplication of control etc............yep, that's a students answer for you.
A campus in both Glos and Chelt is the obvious answer, and just keep it simple.
This hoohah about the HUGE reduction in funding of £0.5BN overall, is point 1 of 1 percent to Glos Uni, £30k, that means the bisquit budget gets rationed this year!
Get real, stop the Glos v Chelt rants, and grow up and get on with life, and don't expect the state to bail you out of everything.”

“Perhaps the<1% drop in funding could be made up by the "university" concentrating on giving a decint education rather than giving itself delusions of adequacy. Adding "university" to the letter heads does not stop this place being a trumped up HE college.”

“What are you talking about a human, this is called a discussion the university of Gloucester is faltering and people are saying how it should have been the university of Cheltenham. How is relevant that Cheltenham is in Gloucestershire, if that was a relevant point then why isn¿t everything Gloucester centric, for example the county cricket club is in Bristol?! I agree with other the university should have been created solely in Cheltenham, concentrating on its already enviable arts faculty, now we have a university that is all over the place making bad financial decisions, and the only people that suffer are the staff and students.”

“"A Human" ~ Oh dear, how sad!, If this is what Gloucester does for you, you can keep it! I am all for seperating Gloucester city and its environs out of the rest of the county. I really would be a lot more jolly then!!! HA HA!”
