Vets warn of myxomatosis outbreak in Quedgeley
VETS are warning against a breakout of fatal disease myxomatosis in pet rabbits in Quedgeley.
It is suspected to have been picked up from fleas carried by other pets.
Three rabbits have been struck down with the fatal disease, causing swelling to the ears, eyes and nose and genital welts. It is highly contagious and although common in wild rabbits, is rare in domestic animals.
Owners can minimise the risk with a simple vaccination, costing around £35, that also protects against some other viral diseases.

“Myxomatosis is actually a virus which was naturally occurring in South American rabbit populations. Within the American rabbit population Myxomatosis is not a fatal disease. However, it is fatal to European rabbits. When European rabbits were released in Australia, with no natural predators, the rabbit population exploded. Myxomatosis infected rabbits were released in the 1950s in an attempt to control the Australian rabbit population. Myxomatosis is present in the UK wild rabbit population and the virus can be transferred to pet rabbits.”

“I believe that myxomatosis was a man made decease created to control the rabbit population from eating all the farmers products during the war years. Therefore this new outbreak of the disease would have been restarted deliberately.”
