ASHLEY VINCENT has signed a three-year deal with Coca-Cola League One club Colchester United.

The former Cheltenham Town forward spent the final two months of the season on loan at the Weston Homes Comm- unity Stadium, scoring against Yeovil Town on the final day.

Vincent, 24, made a total of 69 starts and 62 substitute appearances for the Robins after arriving from Wolves in 2004.

"Signing for Colchester gives me another chance to have a good crack at League One, but in a side that is aiming to play in the Championship," Vincent said. "I want to play at the highest level possible and I feel that I can do that at Colchester United.

"I am aiming to help them get out of the division in what will be a successful season."

Vincent will link up with his former Robins colleague Steven Gillespie at Colchester.

Cheltenham have confirmed that Ian Westlake's contract with the club has been cancell- ed and he is now a free agent.

● Ex-Robins boss John Ward is in competition with Micky Adams for the vacant manager's post at Port Vale.

“Good riddance Ashley, you'll sink into bench-warming obscurity, but at least you made the cut this way.”

“I wonder if Colchester fans REALLY know what the club has bought? I think Ashley will only be a bit-part player for them, as he was for us. He may have a few good games, maybe even score half a dozen goals, but the consistency just isn't there. If Colchester do get promoted, can't see Vincent having any impact at Championship level.”

“Sorry Bob, no bets. As you rightly say, injury prone and a 'sometime' player. I have some sympathy though - Ashley was on fire when he got that season + long injury...sadly he has never regained the form nor promise. Good luck to him. Will he be missed......I think not.”

“This is modern football - a great paucity of talent. I expect the Colchester fans are very excited about signing a 'striker' who has made no impact whatever at this level and plays few games because he is injury prone - OR will he go on to do what so many Robins forwards have done, which is look very ordinary for us and gone on to score goals for their new club. Place your bets”
