Violin player needs £30,000 to buy new instrument
VIOLIN virtuoso Julia Liang has a big task in front of her when it comes to buying a new instrument.
The musician, who returned for a one-off concert, is hoping the performance will help her raise the £30,000 she needs.

The 20-year-old from Cirencester played a selection of classic 20th century works at the Parabola Arts Centre in Cheltenham last night.
She has been trying to attract the attention of generous music lovers who will offer to support her promising career by paying for a new violin.

Julia believes she needs a new instrument to help her pass the Bachelor of Music degree course at the Royal College of Music in London, and go on to be a professional player.
She said: "I have come to a point where I feel that a new violin and bow is needed in order to reach my full potential.
"My teacher plays a Stradivarius, which is worth at least £1m but I do not need one as expensive as that.
"I think £30,000 will buy the quality that I need."
If Julia can raise the money, a French violin maker named Patrick Robin will craft her a custom made instrument.
She has had her current violin, which cost £12,500, for seven years.
The former pupil at Powell's Primary School in Cirencester first picked up a violin aged five and has been honing her craft ever since.
She is currently being tutored by renowned teachers Dr Felix Andrievsky and Sasha Rozhdestvensky, and has performed all over Europe.
Julia is considering taking part in various upcoming competitions, including the Sevenoaks Concerto and the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year.
She said: "I'm more passionate about the violin now than I have ever been.
"I want to continue performing. I would like to do a lot of playing in chamber groups and orchestras.
"I want to keep improving and make a career playing, and to do that I need a better violin."

“Totally agree Bonkim - I'm a bit mystified about why you're making the point, I see nothing special about a Sradivarri instrument. I never have done. I've never stated that I do. I have only ever talked about a "well-crafted instrument" - other than mentioning that "Strad are overpriced". I don't care what its age is nor the name of the person who made it. I care about what it sounds like in the hands of a musician that can make best use of the characteristics of the instrument.”

“I'm sure it was very well crafted for a 13 year old girl, who may or may not go professional. But she has grown and the requirements are now professional.
I also suspect she could sell it at little loss, contributing towards the cost of the new instrument. Perhaps that's already factored in. As ever, TiGs reporting leaves much to be desired.”

“Agreed - they can't tell the difference between a Strad and a well-crafted modern instrument. Neither can I. Miss Liang is raising money to get a well crafted modern instrument.
I fully agree the Strads are overpriced. I don't care how old an instrument is, neither does Miss Liang. She is only interested in the quality and expressiveness of the sound.”
