PLANS to bring in compulsory microchipping in pups to cut down on strays has been backed by Cheltenham's dog warden.

The Government has announced that from April 2016 every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal – or risk facing a £500 fine.

Tiny chips planted under the dog's skin will be coded with owner's name and address – meaning the animal is easily traceable.

Clive Evans, dog warden for Cheltenham Borough Council, said: "Microchipping is the best way to quickly reunite a stray dog with its owner and it also gives the dog permanent identification."

“There's no doubt that stray dogs are a problem. There are about 8 million dogs in the UK and in 2012, some 119,000 of them (1.5%) were rounded up by council dog-catchers and most of them had no identification, but this new law is not the answer. It has been the law since 1992 that all dogs in a public place must have a collar and tag bearing its owner's name and address with a fine of up to £5000 for non-compliance. It is widely ignored by irresponsible dog owners and is not enforced by dog wardens, police or anybody else. A microchip is simply a high-tech version of a tag and at £500 the fine for not having one is a lot lower so irresponsible dog owners will just ignore this law as well. Utterly pointless 'solution' to the problem. Some laws do not reduce crime, they just make criminals of more people.”

“This will be a complete waste of time and money.
The sort of people who currently get their dogs chipped, are the sort that look after it, and would be unlikely to lose it.
On the other hand, the sort of chav who gets a dog for all the wrong reasons, is not going to get it chipped, and so if he or she is taken to Court, any fine will have to be paid at 50p per week out of their benefits.
I would be interested to know how many dogs a year they are currently picking up, and out of that, how many are chipped.”
