Wetherspoon could open branch at Gloucester Docks
WETHERSPOON could be the latest big brand to open up in Gloucester Docks as rumours of a Coots Cafe Bar takeover gather pace.
The Citizen understands Wetherspoon has shown a keen interest in taking on the Gloucester Waterways-owned heritage site.

TAKEOVER? Coots Cafe Bar.
Although the move will dash hopes of Gloucester Brewery taking on the building, business leaders said the addition of one of the nation's top watering holes will give a much-needed shot in the arm to other retailers.
With Nando's and Pizza Express already on site and a new state-of-the-art cinema due to open later this year, it is hoped Wetherspoon will help increase evening vitality in the Docks area.

Beverley Booth, operations manager for Gloucester Brewery, said the news would be a blow to their takeover ambition. "It would be very hard for us to compete with a business the size of Wetherspoon," she said.
"It is no secret we want to move in there. There are already two Wetherspoon in Gloucester, we don't need another one. But it would increase footfall so it is almost like second prize for us."
City Centre Community Partnership chairman Barry Leach said the move would be a big boost for business.
"It is vital there is a strong relationship with the Waterways Museum as the building is a heritage asset. This would be a positive step and bring a new dimension to the Quays."
City council leader Paul James said: "To have another business open at night would help build a critical mass of attractions."
A spokesman for Wetherspoon said: "Wetherspoon has enjoyed great success in and around Gloucester and we are keen to open more pubs in the area. We cannot comment on individual sites."

“It is his Lordships opinion that rather than give Coots the boot, this company might be better off at the other side of the road at the Waterfront....”

“I used to love Wetherspoons in a different town but never been in this one. It like Debenhams is in the "down and out area" of Gloucester where the druggies and drunks hang out and loutish students.”

“Why do we need unnecessary pubs in Gloucester Docks, We already have 2 already just in the City Centre.”

“A Wether$poons just around the corner from the night shelter GREAT at least their customers will have less distance to walk to get smashed out of their brains.”

“"To have another business open at night would help build a critical mass of attractions."
"Critical Mass - Minimum amount of a given fissionable material necessary to achieve a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction under specified conditions."
I don't think a Wetherspoons opening will help create a self-sustaining reaction Paul. If Coots & Fosters couldn't do it why should Weatherspoons?”
