Is Wetherspoons' Ruddles Gloucester's cheapest pint?
WITH the price of a pint hitting an eye-watering £6 in Cheltenham, we hit Gloucester's city centre streets to find a better value beer.
Leaving no stone unturned, The Citizen believes it has discovered a tipple which comes in at a more wallet-friendly price.
For less than a third of what The Tavern charges for a pint of Brooklyn Lager in Cheltenham, JD Wetherspoons Regal pub in King's Square, Gloucester is serving up Ruddles at a very reasonable £1.94.
The 3.7 per cent ale might not be an exotic sup to tantalise the beer aficionado's palate but it's a perfectly acceptable drop of brown nectar.
Gents, come in to Earl's & Co and enjoy a haircut and finish, glass of whisky and a shoeshine for £18.50

Martyn Herbert, spokesman for the Campaign for Real Ale in Gloucestershire, said he'd rather spend a bit more on a beer with more character. "It's a very ordinary beer, not the sort of thing I would drink," he said. "But everything has its place in the market and Wetherspoons know it well.
"Supermarkets sell alcohol at less than this, and it's possible to spend not very much and get very silly. At least with beers like this in pubs such as this, the drinking is controlled to a greater extent."
With several pubs offering pints of lager, beer and cider for £2, or even £1.50 at particular times on certain days, competition is fairly fierce but some choose to pitch their prices higher and go for better quality. The cheapest pint in The Cross Keys is £3.30 – in fact they all are, including Gloucester Brewery's Cherry and White.
"Tax on beer is high and we don't compete with the bigger chains – but we offer an atmosphere that you might not find in a big pub and a good choice of beers which aren't much more," said Bronwyn Bourke, who works in the pub off Southgate Street.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "The Regal has always taken pride in serving a wide range of real ale at excellent value for money prices."
