Residents in Matson are hoping the Winter Olympics will bring the Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre in out of the cold.

The landmark, in Matson Lane, was put on the market for £1.25million at the beginning of January and since then there has been no firm bids for the facility.

Gloucester City Councillor Kate Haigh (Lab, Matson and Robinswood) hopes that the Winter Olympics, which start this weekend, may encourage someone to make a bid.

“Someone might want to make a bid of the back of the Olympics, I’m sure it will stimulate interest anyway,” she said.

“It will probably become more popular because of the Olympics too.”

Mrs Haigh is hoping for a swift sale for the good of the area.

“I really hope that someone comes forward with a bid soon,” she added.

“It is a great facility that is used by a lot by young people, which is obviously great.”

HLL Humberts Leisure, the leisure property specialists, were instructed by Kayterm Ltd to market the sale of the ski centre

Ben Allen, director at Humberts Leisure, is remaining upbeat despite a lack of bids.

He said: “We have received an encouraging response to the marketing and viewings of the ski centre are continuing apace.

“We are hopeful that this early interest will convert into offers for the property in the short term.”

The centre currently forms part of the Ramada Gloucester Hotel and Country Club and is being sold alongside the Gloucester Golf Club.

“After years of neglect and under investment by the owners this place should close unless new owners are going to invest huge sums to bring it into the 21st century.”
