A woman was being questioned on suspicion of arson last night after a fire at a care home in Gloucester.

Residents at Springfield House were evacuated after a fire broke out in one of the bedrooms.

Firefighters were called to the home in Stroud Road at about 10.15pm on Monday.

Staff could smell smoke and evacuated all six residents from the building, which is run by Choice Care Group, before calling 999.

Paul Gold, Choice Care Group chief executive, said: "Our night staff acted very quickly to safely evacuate the building and call the fire brigade.

"As a result, no one was injured and the rest of the home was not damaged, so the residents were able to return shortly afterwards."

Yesterday there was a scorched bed outside the home and police tape across one of the windows.

A fire service spokesman said 15% of the first floor was severely damaged.

One hose reel, two breathing apparatus, a positive pressure ventilation fan and a thermal imaging camera were used to deal with the blaze.

One resident of Stroud Road, who did not want to be named, said: "It must have been quite nasty judging by the look of the bed outside.

"I'm glad they got all the residents out though. I don't know how bad it was. I didn't hear and sirens but I saw the blue flashing lights."

Another resident of the same road, said: "I did notice two fire engines outside the home last night but I didn't see any flames or smoke.

"The firefighters looked pretty relaxed about the whole thing."

A spokesman for Gloucestershire County Council said only one bedroom out of six had been affected by the fire.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: "A 45-year-old woman from Gloucester was arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a residential care home in Stroud Road on Monday,August 3.

"The woman is currently being questioned at Gloucester Police Station."
