Prosecutor Julian Kesner said the couple had been together for a year and lived in a one-bedroom flat where a row broke out.
He said: "A struggle was overheard by the neighbours next door who heard her shouting 'get off me' and another witness said she was shouting 'help me' while banging on the door trying to take refuge.
"They opened the front door and saw her covered in blood and she said to the neighbour 'Keith just hit me over the head with a pole'.
"The defendant then appeared and tried to drag her back into the flat."
The court heard she had a 5cm cut to her head, which required six staples, and doctors also noticed "tram-type" marks on her stomach.
Bryan, who suffered scratches during the scuffle, admitted the crime despite knowing Miss Amkhuba was not prepared to give evidence in court.
In mitigation, James Haskell said: "Undoubtedly alcohol played a part and it was a stupid argument that started as she thought the defendant was flirting with another lady.
"She has made it clear she would like their relationship to resume."
