HUNDREDS of women braved cold temperatures to take part in the town's third Midnight Walk.

The event, which raises vital funds for Sue Ryder Care's Leckhampton Court Hospice, went without a hitch as women put their best foot forward to complete a 10km circular route around the town.

Following a warm-up on Saturday night, walkers set off from Cheltenham Racecourse at midnight to stride into Sunday and raise money for the cause.

They were cheered on by residents in the town as well as the many volunteers who helped make the event possible.

Delighted friends Sue Colwill, Jane Morgan and Tara Gooding were first over the line.

Sian Harris, event fundraiser for Sue Ryder Care, said: "They were so pleased and it was great to see their happy faces.

"More than 600 woman took part, which was fantastic, and there was a great atmosphere throughout with everyone cheering them on to keep their spirits up.

"Last year's walk had a midway point where the walkers could turn around but this time we opted for a circular route, which took out any repetition.

"The feedback was really good and all the walkers were treated to a continental breakfast when they returned and a goody bag with, among other things, a medal inside.

"We hope to raise in the region of £50,000, which will all go towards the hospice." Sue Ryder Care provides support to people with challenging end of life and long-term conditions.

Women can still sign up for the Gloucester event, which takes place on May 22, by visiting the website www.suerydercare.org/midnightwalks or calling 01242 246293. Entry costs £15.
