NINE new jobs have been created in Cheltenham town centre with the return of a discount bookshop, almost four years after it closed.

The Works has invested £250,000 in the new shop in the High Street, taking over a unit which had been empty for around six months after British Bookshops and Stationers Ltd moved out.

In January 2009 The Works closed down its store on the section of the High Street where the Regent Arcade is expanding, due to what a company spokesman called "tough trading conditions".

"We have wanted to return to the town for some time, but have been waiting for the right location to become available.

"We're delighted with the unit that we've secured on the High Street.

He added: "Through providing this substantial investment to Cheltenham, we hope to cement our relationship with the community and help boost the town's already thriving high street."

The Works opened in 1981 and currently has more than 300 shops across the country.

It went into administration from February to May in 2008.

Mr Keaney said: "This year, we have added ten branches to our UK network.

Value

"The Cheltenham store allows us to further our position as a leading value retailer not only of books, but also of arts, crafts and gifts, providing low-cost buys for all of the family."

Cheltenham town centre manager Martin Quantock says The Works decision to launch a new shop in Cheltenham is a shot in the arm to the local economy.

He said: "It is positive that The Works is back. The fact that The Works has filled up an empty unit is great.

"It's good that they are a quality retailer and it's brilliant that they have provided new employment."

He added: "It shows that the town is still an attractive place for retailers to invest in."

Signs of economic growth continue in Cheltenham as three other shops have recently opened their doors

They are the Pitta Place, a healthy fast food alternative in the High Street, betting shop Paddy Power a few doors down and The Present People in the Regent Arcade.
