THE English Football Association is to jointly fund a studentship at the University of Gloucestershire on injury research in female youth players.

Dr Mark De Ste Croix's research on female injury risk has gained international recognition and the English FA have agreed to jointly fund an MSc by Research studentship to build upon his research.

He presented the FA medical team at St George's Park, home of the new National Football Centre, with a number of potential research projects examining the mechanisms associated with injury risk in female youth footballers.

Dr De Ste Croix, who is faculty research director at the university's Faculty of Applied Sciences, said: "There is still so much to learn surrounding the mechanisms of injury risk in female youth players which is complicated by normal growth and maturation.

Dr de Ste Croix's research is ongoing and he has been working with teams such as Barcelona FC as well as the FA.
