YOUNGSTERS in Up Hatherley and Warden Hill are being encouraged to give something back to the community.

Leckhampton safer community team is setting up a time exchange scheme in support of the new Brizen Young People's Centre.

Along with partners from Gloucestershire Youth Service, the initiative encourages young people to give up their time doing community work in exchange for rewards.

Police community support officer Andrea Waldeck, who is organising the project with youth worker Karen Smith, said: "This scheme will allow young people to get involved in their community in a very positive way.

"In return for their time, they can then take part in various, exciting team-building activities.

"The scheme works by them 'banking' the hours they take part in community work, which can then be cashed in for the activities."

The project, which is expected to start in April, has already been used successfully elsewhere.

Karen said: "I have worked on one in Leamington Spa and one in Birmingham that both worked really well.

"We won't be organising anything specific as rewards – it will be up to the young people to decide. If they want to go sailing, we will take them sailing. If they want to go fishing, we'll do that."

To prepare for the scheme, PCSO Waldeck has started sounding out people who would appreciate some help with day-to-day tasks.

"We are looking for people who may benefit from the scheme," she said.

"Elderly or vulnerable people who need a bit of help with DIY or with their garden can get in touch and any community groups who want assistance should also contact us."
