UNDER-AGE drinking will not be tolerated in Abbeymead.

That is the response from police after locals found a 14-year-old boy heavily drunk and stuck in the River Twyver.

The local boy was found in near Bittern Avenue at 4.30pm on Sunday, August 15.

It is believed he had drunk a bottle of vodka and a bottle of wine.

Two men, believed to be in their 60s, found the boy and dragged him out of the brook.

Police sergeant Trish McCavera, from Hucclecote Safer Community Team, said: "Once the child was rescued from the brook, paramedics checked him over and the officers returned him to his home address where officers gave strong words of advice to the mother.

"Police have also been in contact with partner agencies in regards to the incident to try and ensure this doesn't happen again."

She added that the SCT took alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour "very seriously" and ran an operation throughout the summer to crack down on it.

She added: "Hotspot areas are being patrolled more regularly, both in the day and at night by uniformed and plain-clothed police officers, PCSOs, and specials.

"Test purchase operations to ensure shops aren't selling to underage customers are also planned and we will continue developing educational long-term solutions with our partners to ensure children have enough legitimate activities to keep them occupied."

Councillor Andrew Gravells, who represents the Abbey ward, said: "This is pretty untypical behaviour for our area.

"I'm pleased though that the police continue to work with us to knock this kind of activity on the head when it does occur.

"Drinking to excess at any age is dangerous, but it's especially worrying when you get people as young as this drinking to excess.

"Any parents who think their children have addiction problems, of any kind, can get excellent help and advice from their local GP surgeries."

“hello, just to say i am one of the kid-in-questions friends andi looked at this artice to see if he was telling the truth
and i saw the comments being posted
i just wanted to clear up
a.) please dont blame his mother, as she had no idea and she DIDNT supply him the alcohol, but i shant say who DID give it to him
b.) not being one of his friends you wouldnt understand that he got extremely angry and violent and ran off and we couldnt find him. if we had, we wouldve pulled him out of the brook, and as it is only his feet werein the brook, the title is merely a tabloid scare.

thanks, and i dont expect you to take me at my word and please dontcomment like "why didnt you take the alcohol off him"
because, it was his to do what he wanted with and we didnt have any right to take it from him.
and, that is the complete truth, believe it if you wish.”

“How did he end up stuck in the brook? If he had drunk that much he surely wouldn¿t have been in control of his body, and if he was caught in the water this could have lead to a serious accident.”

“I've seen so many youngsters drunk in the area this summer, and it really unsettles me. It's not that I can't deal with drunk people, but I've been driving along Abbeymead Avenue and seen someone zigzagging across the road. He clearly didn't know what direction he was heading in. Drinking is fine, but getting into that state is really worrying. I wish it wasn't seen as such a cool thing to get so drunk like that.”

“"strong words of advice to his mother!" - is that code for told her to keep better control of her child. He's 14 for christ's sake. A glass of wine with the family on a Sunday lunch time should be the limit of his alcohol consumption. How did he manage to get hold of the alcohol - through her? How can she be so irresponsible.”

“Manhandling a 14-year-old "child" can land you in a whole load of trouble these days - better to have left him where he was!”
