THREE nuisance families have been evicted from a Gloucester road after plaguing neighbours with anti-social behaviour.

The families were thrown out of Overbrook Road in Hardwicke after reports of loud music and youngsters gathering around drinking.

Police and environmental health officers from Stroud District Council were called to the scene to hand out a noise abatement order.

But because of the levels of anti-social behaviour in the past, it was decided more decisive action was needed.

Gloucester South police inspector Neil Smith said people in the street had "suffered enough".

The families have moved to other areas of Gloucester, although police won't confirm where. Some residents in Overbrook Road said they were happy to see the families go.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: "They were drinking all the time and hanging around outside on their front drive.

"We couldn't come out of our own front door without seeing them.

"They were noisy until 2-3am. They didn't seem to want to get jobs. They had the money to buy beer and that was that. Since they've gone it's been lovely."

Another woman added: "They were always outside their house."

But other residents said the triple eviction had been an over-reaction.

One said: "There was nothing wrong with them. There wasn't really a problem. The kids were out the front so they were there watching them. They were outside chilling. People on the other side of the road are posher. They have jobs. They look down their noses at us who don't."

The eviction was made easier through a new initiative called Project Solace, launched earlier this month, where police work with other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour.

In this case they worked with Gloucester City Homes and Gloucester City Council's anti-social behaviour officer. CCTV has also been installed in the road.

Mr Smith said: "We took this action with our partners in the Solace team as a last resort because the people in this street had suffered enough and there was no alternative.

"There has been a noticeable improvement in the area since the families have left and a sharp reduction in reports of anti-social behaviour, which shows how this new initiative is helping to make a real difference already."

Ashley Green, chief executive of Gloucester City Homes, said: "Project Solace demonstrates the commitment of all multi-agency partners to tackle anti-social behaviour effectively where it exists in our communities."

“When I lived in Abbeymead there were some Housing Association tenants nearby and they never caused a problem. The main nuisance was our stuck up neighbours who parked their cars without any regard for anyone else, their brat of a son and their annoying friends who would come round and get very drunk at "dinner parties" and make loads of noise in the garden which was almost underneath my bedroom window.”

“As soon as I saw this headline....I knew that people would jump onto the 'let's slate Kingsway' band wagon. Surely, enough is enough??
If you type the names of a few local areas (ie Quedgeley, Tuffley, Podsmead, Abbeymead, Kingsway etc) and look at the headlines for these areas, you will see that the area that is most badly reported about is NOT Kingsway. The crime figures back this up too.
Kingsway IS a nice place to live, so, PLEASE, wind your necks in and stop slating it.”

“Normally I'm fairly liberal when it comes to matters like this: I don't believe people in council houses are all scum and layabouts, and social housing is vital in any developed country. However, although it is a right, rights can be withdrawn if abused. In my opinion it should run on a 3 strikes and you're out system - if a tenant gets 3 complaints in say a 12-month period, then they're out. Not just moved but out. They're name is put to the back of the waiting list, to allow them a second chance in the future. Until them, its up to them to fend for themselves. If they have kids, put them in local authority care. Tough, but they can't say they weren't warned.”

“i live on a private & housing association mixed estate in tewkesbury, if i'm absolutely honest, it's not usually the council kids causing trouble at night, its usually the private kids or the kids from other estates who come to visit their mates and think there's no comeback.
the ones in their cars are the worst, they must think everyone loves the same music as them, we've also had quite old kids (17 & 18) cherry knocking then boasting about it on facebook.
they weren't council kids either, (trust me, i know)
though it is true, council tennants do seem to love sitting on kerbs outside their front doors with the music on and all doors and windows open????
there are good and bad in all of us peeps, would be good if we could try to get on.”
