Cheltenham High Street repairs planned
The stretch of road - which is not pedestrianised - between Henrietta Street and Ambrose Street will be closed from Monday.
Ambrose Street itself will also close as part of the £130,000 project, which has been timed to coincide with half term in a bid to minimise disruption.
Gloucestershire Highways says the affected road has deteriorated to such an extent that highways teams will need to dig as deep as two feet in some sections of the road to repair the damage.
Councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment, said: "While this work was scheduled to take place soon, we've had to bring it forward as an urgent job because the condition is now so bad.
"As part of Operation Road Rescue we are targeting the worst areas first and this certainly fits the criteria.
"Fixing the roads in Gloucestershire is our top priority but inevitably this will cause some inconvenience to motorists.
"Closing a busy road is always difficult, but in this case we've tried to minimise disruption by doing the work in half term when there are less cars on the road.
"I would ask people to be patient while the scheme is completed."
