On the rise

A CHELTENHAM-based independent trader is showing its larger competitors how to move on up in the music business.

Rise, which is based in the Beechwood Shopping Centre, has seen business boom since it was founded 18 months ago.

Selling anything from classical, jazz, and folk music to metal, indy, and dance, as well as a wide range of DVDs and books, the store has succeeded where some of its rivals have failed.

It has already opened a second store at Warwick University, has ambitious plans to expand further and a calendar of events to look forward to.

Manager Lawrence Montgomery, 21, who founded the company in November 2007, said: "Since opening we have gone from strength to strength.

"The figures are healthy and the gross profit margins are high.

"I know these are trying times for retailers and plenty of music stores have gone out of business.

"But if the product you are selling is a good one, then you've got every chance of pulling through. And I certainly believe that we've got that.

"We sell a wider range of music than any other high street store, and currently stock more than 20,000 different products.

"We have a massive back catalogue, and are always trying to bring in new stock."

Rise plays host to a range of promotional events, and this Friday Welsh hip-hoppers Goldie Lookin Chain, play at 5pm.

Lawrence added: "We opened a store on Warwick University campus last year, building on the success of the first store, and that has provided a real boost to revenue.

"We now employ 11 staff and are looking to grow further. It is hard to get the financial backing at the moment as banks' hands are tied but our strong relationships with suppliers put us in a good position to move forward when the time is right."
