Collicutt hails former boss Allen senior

Friday, July 03, 2009, 08:00

Bishop's Cleeve boss Paul Collicutt has paid tribute to Denis Allen ahead of this evening's friendly against Cheltenham Town.

The father of current Robins manager Martin, Denis handed Collicutt his Cheltenham debut in 1975 at the age of 16, making him the club's youngest player.

"I am very grateful to Denis because he put a lot of faith in me," Collicutt said.

"I grew up very quickly learning from the likes of Dave Lewis, Roger Thorndale and Kenny Skeen.

"Denis was a great character, very jovial in the changing room, and he used to do some outrageous things."

Allen senior died in 1995 and Collicutt has not crossed paths with Martin since then, but he is looking forward to renewing acquaintances at Kayte Lane tonight (7.30pm).

"I have always followed Martin's career, but I have not seen him since Denis's funeral," Collicutt said.

"That day you could see Denis was fondly looked upon, with some great friends in the game.

"He was highly thought of and I learned a lot from him. I'd put Martin in the same category and if he can put the same faith and belief in the current players at Cheltenham they won't go far wrong."

Allen, who was a regular at Whaddon Road as a youngster, said: "I am going there for this game because it is my dad's old players like Dave Lewis and Paul Collicutt. I will be speaking to Cleeve because I don't want a game like the British Lions against South Africa."

Allen plans to give his professionals and second year scholars around 30 minutes of action this evening.

John Finnigan has been sidelined for two weeks with a calf injury.

Former Hereford United midfielder Ben Smith is set to feature on trial, while Justin Richards and David Hutton make their first appearances since signing for Cheltenham earlier in the summer.

● Barry Richardson is set to replace Alan Fettis as Cheltenham's goalkeeping coach.

Former Lincoln City number one Richardson, 39, was at Nottingham Forest last season and is still active as a player.

His arrival could see second choice Will Puddy loaned out, with Richardson sitting on the bench in support of Scott Brown.
