The assessors of the award were especially impressed by innovations such as the use of local produce in the popular Café Nerva at the City Museum and the range of plants in the delightful garden at the Folk Museum.
Councillor Paul James, Leader of Gloucester City Council said: "The museums are two of our top attractions, which bring thousands visitors to the city each year."
"It is important to demonstrate to visitors that the city council takes its environmental responsibilities seriously."
"The standards of the awards are very high and receiving the accolade is recognition of the effort made by all of the staff. The recommendations made by the assessors have been noted so that we can aim for the gold award next year."
The Green Tourism Business Scheme is the leading sustainable tourism certificate in the UK with their awards aiming to promote green friendly businesses, assessing a range of areas such as energy and water efficiency, and minimising waste.
Businesses that meet the required standard are awarded either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. More information is available at www.green-tourism.com.
