Primrose Vale Farm Shop tantalises the tastebuds

Thursday, August 21, 2008, 08:00

AS visitors enter the Primrose Vale Farm Shop, nestled on the edge of the Cotswold scarp between Cheltenham and Gloucester, the tantalising smell of delicious home-cooking wafts through the air.

The Farm Shop & Pick Your Own, in Shurdington Road, Cheltenham, prides itself on growing super fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables picked daily from its fields.

With everything on offer from robust winter roots, quintessential soft summer fruits or the first cut of asparagus, there's plenty to suit everyone's tastes.

The business' philosophy is to reconnect people with nature and to source from Gloucestershire and its surrounding counties.

The shop sells fresh fruit and vegetables, breakfast cereals, fruit juices, flour and mayonnaise – all locally produced.

Game from Roger Hicks in Burford, and tender beef pork or lamb from Adey's Organic Meats raised in Berkeley and free range chickens from Freemans of Newent.

There is also a cheese counter selling Windrush goats cheese, Lightwood's Elgar, Godsells Three Virgins and of course Mrs Smarts authentic Double Gloucester.

Also available are a range of home-made ready meals and soups made on the premises.

The farm shop was only opened in 2007 but the pick your own facility has been up and running since the 70s.

Pick your own is a popular part of the business, providing a great day out.

Ready for picking at the moment at PYO are strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, runner beans and broad beans.

Tim Ilott, manager of Primrose Vale Farm Shop and PYO, said: "We pride ourselves on having locally sourced produce – if we can't get something locally we prefer to wait until it becomes available rather than look further afield."

Last month Primrose Vale was named Cotswold Life's Farm Shop Of The Year.
