As to the suggestion that the death penalty is a deterrant, it doesn't seem to be so in many other countries that do have the death penalty for murder, such as the USA - they have far higher crime rates. Many criminals, paedophiles in particular, believe that they will never get caught, so no penalty would be a reasonable deterrant.

Far better investigation of crimes is needed, and a willingness to listen to children who say that something bad has happened to them. At the same time, we mustn't take everything at face value, or poor Lord McAlpine would probably have been lynched by this time.”

By the way, there is evidence that paedophiles often start their offending early in life, so at what age would you execute them? Some sex offenders are known to start before the age of ten years.”
