“Good thought and yes some things are expensive. My friend got his washing machine repaired for under £60. He came to their house and did it.”

“Which garage do you go to? A bit over-blown - the trade will not want people to stop using their services - but of course, price is what the market will bear.”

“Bonkim2003 The car i have is a BMW a P reg, old car but i like it, so you can work out the garage that i am refering to, when i said that it seemed a bit pricey, i was told that they could do it a bit cheaper as it was an older model,.. That being £160+vat, what the age of the car got to do with an oil change is beyond understanding,,, For less than 30min's work i would expect to pay no more than £70,. Its no wonder the country is on a downward slope, when over charging is rife. seems they want a days pay for 30min's work...”

“cheltenham20 - there must be independents who don't charge the earth. So don't go to main dealers for servicing - better still re-learn DIY car maintenance. Similarly most household equipment - running maintenance can be done by householders - learn new tricks.Price of anything is what the guy will accept and what you can/will pay. We have got used to low prices for most tings all these years - all that will change soon and we will all have to cut out non-essentials.”
