Real ale gong for The Royal William at Cranham

Friday, September 26, 2008, 08:00

OWNERS of a Gloucestershire pub are toasting their success after winning a national award for their beers.

The Royal William, at Cranham, has been awarded the Cask Marque Accreditation for the quality of the real ales on sale.

Since re-opening in December last year, Tony Barnfield, Tina Foster and husband Chris have seen trade grow steadily.

Chris said they hoped it was the first of many awards.

"We currently have Festival Gold and Amber from Cheltenham and Uley Bitter from Stroud which are doing well," he said.

"I have been in the pub trade for 20 years and looking at the current state of businesses at the moment, if you want to be successful you have to serve real ales.

"Lager comes from a pump and is easy to do but the thing that a lot of people are looking for are the real ales nowadays which are very different."

A plaque was given to the pub to show customers of the award and their rights.

Drinkers are encouraged to comment independently on the quality of ale in the pub to the Cask Marque organisation.

The Royal William is working to get more local beers on the menu to compliment its new food menu.

"We try to source as many of our products as we can locally and try to support other local businesses as well," Chris said.
