FIVE Gloucestershire establishments have been named as the favourite pubs of the Michelin inspectors.

In the new Michelin Guide – Eating Out in Pubs 2009 – the best food away from restaurants is detailed in each county.

Some receive special mention for their food, service, value and atmosphere.

In Gloucestershire, the Horse and Groom, in Bourton-on-the-Hill, The Fox Inn, in Lower Oddington and The Ragged Cot, in Minchinhampton, are singled out as Inspectors' Favourites.

The same honour is bestowed upon The Bell, in Sapperton, and The Gumstool Inn, in Calcot.

It was the "hearty, unfussy cooking" and generous portions that the Michelin experts liked about the Horse and Groom.

The Fox Inn was praised for being "rustically romantic" with its flag floors, wooden beams and open fires.

"Rustic, robust and uses mainly local ingredients," said the inspectors about the cooking at The Ragged Cot.

The level of service really impressed the Michelin people when they visited The Bell.

"Friendly, efficient and well-paced," they reported.

The Gumstool Inn was said to combine classic country style with contemporary chic.

Eating Out in Pubs 2009 is published by Michelin Maps and Guides and costs £14.99.
