What is Affordable Warmth?
Affordable Warmth is another name for the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation or HHCRO. HHCRO is one of the three targets set by ECO (The Energy Companies Obligation).
Affordable Warmth will see energy-saving home improvements like new boilers and insulation available to people on low incomes and/ or on certain benefits.
What can I get from the Affordable Warmth programme?
There are three types of energy-saving improvement that you may be entitled to under the Affordable Warmth scheme. These are:
1) A new boiler
Your boiler accounts for around 60% of your annual energy costs, so installing a new energy-efficient boiler could save you a lot of money.
2) Loft insulation
Heat rises, so if your loft isn't insulated, you could be losing up to a quarter of your heat through your roof. Better loft insulation will hold in more heat, saving you money.
3) Cavity wall insulation
Most homes built after 1920 were built with a gap or cavity between the inner and outer layers of the walls. Filling this gap with insulation holds in more heat, so you save money.
You could be eligible for any or all of these upgrades, depending on your
circumstances and your home
How can a new boiler or insulation be free?
As part of our Government’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions they have implemented ECO (The Energy Companies Obligation). ECO requires the energy companies to improve the energy efficiency of households by assisting with improved home heating efficiency for people on a low income or on certain benefits (the Affordable Warmth Group). This home efficiency programme has become known as Affordable Warmth.
Under Affordable Warmth, free energy home improvements may be available to people who need it most. New boilers and insulation may be examples of these energy saving improvements. If you're eligible, these improvements are completely free, and they could save you up to hundreds of pounds a year in reduced heating costs.
Who qualifies for Affordable Warmth
The Affordable Warmth scheme offers help to those who need it most whether you own you own home or rent it. Generally speaking, that means people on low incomes, and/ or those on certain benefits, such as pension credit, child tax credit, income support, working tax credit.
Will I get a bill for the upgrades? Who pays?
No, you will not receive a bill for the upgrades to your home.
Under ECO (The Energy Companies Obligation) the big energy companies (the people you pay for your gas and electricity) have allocated money to pay for
This money is used to pay for Affordable Warmth upgrades to your home.
You will never receive a bill for any Affordable Warmth upgrades (unless you choose to contribute). If you qualify, the entire process - from application, to home assessment, to installation - is completely free.
How can Hamilton and Thurston help you benefit from free energy-saving home improvements?
Our promise to customers is to advise you at every step, while managing the whole process, so it takes all the hassle out of it for you.
The first step in the process is to review your application and supporting evidence to ensure all parts meet the criteria set out for this scheme.
Once the application has been approved, we will instruct one of our accredited gas engineers and domestic energy assessors to visit your home to carry out a detailed review of the energy efficiency of your home and a full inspection of the boiler.
We will also undertake a complete energy performance report (EPC) that will be produced for the Affordable Warmth scheme, with the recommended measures to improve the overall efficiency of your home.
From the findings on the EPC, related supporting information and evidence, we will coordinate with our network of providers to source funding available and provision the installation of the recommended measures you agree to via our network of approved installers. When the installations have been completed, we will then notify Gas Safe who will issue you with a Gas Safe Certificate confirming all the works comply with building regulations.
